The Sona pillow is to be utilized for sleeping. The
purpose of the pillow is to maintain sleep in the side position.
The pillow consists of two inclined surfaces which is the primary
sleeping surface and a flatter lower surface. The striped side is
meant to be the side facing the persons shoulder. There is also a hand recess
on either lower part of the triangular surface.
While lying on either side, extend your arm in
the open space under the pillow, so that your head is lying in a
slanted position (see Figure 1). Your arm should be kept extended
while sleeping. The head should be maintained on the incline of
whichever side the person is sleeping and on the same side as the
extended hand. The arm goes in the recessed space. (see Figure
1).
For getting better sleep compliance, the Sona
Pillow should be utilized regularly while sleeping. Using a body
pillow to hug or put between the legs assists in maintaining the
side sleeping position.
The head, while on the inclined surface is facing
downward and this position allows the jaw to be pulled forward by
gravity. This stops the jaw from falling backwards and causing an
obstruction in the back of the throat. This is what causes sleep
apnea and snoring, and this is more likely to happen while laying
on your back. Drooling may also be encountered, and is a normal
finding while maintaining the correct position.
Sleep apnea is a serious condition and may predispose
and worsen major medical conditions such as heart failure, stroke,
high blood pressure, and other cardiac conditions. Excessive sleepiness
is also a major cause of motor vehicular and work accidents. Sleep
apnea should be diagnosed and treated by your health care provider.
Certain populations will not be a candidate for the Sona Pillow
and should consult with a physician to determine if you are one
of those individuals.
The Sona Pillow undergoes normal wear and tear
and should be fluffed up periodically by pressing on the surface
from the side not containing the stripes. With regular usage, it
is recommended to replace the pillow annually.
